What Kind of Freelancer Will You Be in Retirement [infographic]

October 4, 2017 by Sharlyn Lauby Leave a Comment

I ran this infographic over on HR Bartender and wanted to share it here as well. We talked about having a side hustle or freelance gig as part of unretirement. Organizations will be looking for contingent workers. as part of their staffing strategy. The question becomes what kind of contingent worker are you?  The term includes on-call, temporary, freelancers, consultants, and contractors (just to name a few). But even within these titles, there are differences.

Take freelancers for example. If you Google the definition of freelancer, it says “working for different companies at different times rather than being permanently employed by one company.” By this definition, I’m a freelancer. A full-time freelancer.

But I believe many people would say that a person with a full-time job and a side-hustle does freelancing. Or a person who is retired and takes an occasional project. LinkedIn recently shared this infographic on the five different types of freelancers in today’s workplace.

freelancer, freelance, gig economy, LinkedIn, side gigger, consultants

Organizations are not only going to want to make decisions about hiring freelancers for their business, but they are going to have to decide what kind of freelancer will fit with their operation. I’m not just talking about culture fit – although that is important. Freelancers have to be able to work within the structure of the organization. So, if the company needs their freelancer to stop by occasionally for meeting, can a “side gigger” make themselves available? Or if the organization would like to engage a freelancer for a year, is the “substitute” going to bail on them once they find a job? These are things organizations need to consider. Which means these are things for you to consider as you plan out your unretirement.

What type of work are you planning to do? When considering a freelancer assignment, think about more than just the task. Will phone calls or meetings be required? Is there the possibility this could turn into a regular freelancer assignment? It might help you decide the type of work you want to do and assignments you want to consider.

Consider short-term and long-term arrangements. Speaking of assignments, if you want to have a regular side gig, then you will need to build relationships with organizations. That means marketing. Think about what you’re prepared to do to keep some semi-steady income.  Everyone benefits from the arrangement, but it takes work and resources from both sides.

Once you understand the type of freelancer you want to be, it will make it easier for organizations to hire you. Hiring the wrong freelancer is like hiring the wrong employee. The company will constantly be in hiring mode and training people to do the work. That’s not something they want to do. And you don’t want the hassle of finding new clients all the time.

What We’re UP To – September 2017

September 27, 2017 by Sharlyn Lauby Leave a Comment

September, Fall, Fall season, Unretirement Project, retirement, pumpkin

Disclosure: Occasionally we receive free products for review or include advertising links in posts, but no one impacts the honesty of our opinions.

Watching | The Matrix Trilogy

> Keith and I are binge watching some classic movies like Oceans 11, Star Wars, etc. I had to admit that I hadn’t seen The Matrix until recently. So, we’re watching the entire trilogy in September. Better late than never. (Oh, and Blade Runner is next…)

Reading | Social Security Strategies: How to Optimize Retirement Benefits

> This book, in its third edition, is a very detailed explanation about how social security works including the best time to file for benefits. I’m quickly discovering that the best way to understand social security and the benefits available to you is by doing your homework way in advance.

Working On | Internet Security

> I don’t know that I have all the answers with this one, but the recent Equifax security breach has left us evaluating our internet security. What action should we take as a result? The Federal Trade Commission has posted some information. Moving forward, are there steps we should take to protect our online information?

Feeling | Empathy

> We are sending lots of positive vibes and prayers to those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. We were very fortunate. Planned for the worst and hoped for the best. Here’s a great article from Suzanne Lucas titled “9 Ways Your Business Can Help Hurricane Harvey’s Houston Victims”. It applies equally for individuals looking to help.

Planning | Apple Walks

> I learned something new during the most recent Apple event. Besides learning about the new products Apple is introducing in the fall, I discovered Apple Walks. These are free photo walks that Apple Store employees conduct to teach you more about the camera features in your iPhone. I’m planning to take one soon!

Loving | BeatsX Wireless In-Ear Headphones

> With my transition to a Mac computer, I’ve decided to go all in and get a pair of Beats headphones. We’ve been toying with the idea of getting rid of our landline at some point, and these neckbuds would be easy to wear on phone calls. I also like listening to music when I write and this will allow me to do so without annoying Keith.

Geeking | SFMOA Text a Picture

> The San Francisco Museum of Art recently rolled out a new feature called “Send Me”. Simply text them a word and they will text back a work of art. I love the idea. What a great way to start a September day or take a quick distraction to enjoy a piece of history.

Lots going on and we haven’t even started pumpkin spice season this early in September. So, what’s UP with you?

What We’re UP To – August 2017

August 30, 2017 by Sharlyn Lauby Leave a Comment

August, UP, departures, flights, travel, retirement, unretirement

Watching | Solar Eclipse

> Did you see it?! Keith and I were out there in the middle of August with our NASA approved eclipse shades on. South Florida didn’t have a total blackout, but it was still amazing. I saw a headline that the solar eclipse cost the U.S. $700M in lost productivity. But with the next one quite a few years away…hopefully people took a few moments to enjoy.

Reading | WTFJHT

> It’s an acronym for “What the F*** Just Happened Today”. Matt Kiser started an electronic newsletter about the shock and awe of today’s politics. It’s become very successful and turned into a full-time occupation for him. It can be a daunting task to sift through today’s news. Matt does a great job of curating the headlines.

Working On | Cleaning Out Old Photos

> Both hard copy and digital images. First, I plan to review all my digital images and get rid of the slightly blurry and crooked ones that we’re never going to show anyone. Then, my next goal will be to decide what hard copy images should be transferred to digital. If you know of a great company for converting photos to digital, leave a note in the comments!

Feeling | Ready

> I’ve just spent a couple of days working on air travel, hotel reservations, and shuttle trips. Fall conference season is coming. It will be fun. I always learn a lot. (And getting to see the autumn foliage is fabulous!)

Planning | Specifically, Estate Planning

> We already have wills, etc. But I’ve seen quite a few articles recently about the importance of estate planning. One of them was Next Avenue’s “The Biggest Estate Planning Mistake People Make”. It’s made us realize that regularly reviewing our existing plans is important. Estate planning isn’t a one and done activity.

Loving | Cold-Brew Coffee

> I gave up drinking coffee in the morning a few years ago. Coffee decided it just didn’t like me anymore. But this August I’ve tried a couple of Starbuck’s new cold-brew coffees and really like them. So much so, that we’re attempting to make our own cold-brew at home.

Geeking | New iMac Computer

> I finally made the switch. I love my iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. But I’ve been a holdout when it comes to my desktop computer. No more. I’ve converted to an iMac. It does take a little getting used to, but I’m getting the hang of it. Once my file conversion is complete, Keith says he’s going to be next. Wish us luck!

What’s UP with you?
